RuPaul vs. Ron Paul: The fight is on

Courtesy Jason Shumaker

Logo and VH1 announced yesterday that RuPaul, the “most popular drag queen in the world” is going the way of every Republican presidential candidate and heading to New Hampshire. While RuPaul’s appearance at Red Arrow Diner in Manchester at 9 a.m. Saturday morning is clearly a thinly veiled publicity junket for the new season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and new record “Glamazon,” the funnier reason for the visit is to make it clear that the drag queen did not, contrary to what some well-vandalized signs say, come in third place in the Iowa caucus. Yes, you read that right—RuPaul is going to New Hampshire so that everyone knows he isn’t Ron Paul and isn’t running for president.

But would it really be a bad thing if RuPaul was running instead of Ron Paul? Here are some reasons he might make a better candidate than the Texas congressman.

Both Ron Paul and RuPaul dance to the beat of their own drummer; their opinions and actions have both accrued a strong following. RuPaul might be better in that he doesn’t think that most things are unconstitutional and probably doesn’t want to eliminate the Department of Education.

On that same note RuPaul is probably a better candidate than Ron Paul in that RuPaul’s only political affiliation is “being a proud American.” With the vitriol the goes on in Washington, it’s probably best for a candidate to be as unaffiliated as possible.

Ron Paul makes his political statements by vehemently railing against the unconstitutionality of most of the United States government institutions. RuPaul does so by dressing as a woman – like he says himself, “anytime a man leaves the house in a wig and a pair of cha cha heels, he’s making a political statement.” And, while it may be difficult to admit, RuPaul’s political statements are less “crazy old man” than Ron Paul’s (and a lot more fashionable, amiright?).

Okay so RuPaul might not be a very viable candidate, but neither is Ron Paul, really. Despite his strong showing in Iowa, he might actually have to buy some of RuPaul’s Drag Race Shoes in order to get votes from people who aren’t Kelly Clarkson and bros who stopped listening after Ron Paul said “legalize it.”

Thus the Eye officially endorses RuPaul for the GOP candidacy. Viva la cha cha heels and cue the angry comments!
