Columbia doctors confront the ‘thin ideal’
For young women, the current cultural climate poses a constant threat to health, as every day brings with it a torrent of images of thinness. Social media websites (often dubbed as “pro-ana” forums) in particular advocate dangerous means of losing weight, often triggering eating disorders in female viewers.
To find out more, The Eye filmed a visit to the Columbia Center for Eating Disorders in Washington Heights and spoke with clinicians Allegra Broft and Rachel Marsh of the Eating Disorders Research Unit.
