Jumping out of the blocks with track star Kyra Caldwell
Columbia College senior Kyra Caldwell has consistently led the Columbia women’s track and field team in 60m, 100m, and 400m hurdles—holding Columbia records in all three and an Ivy record in the 60m. Two weekends ago at the Metropolitan Indoor Track & Field Championships, the Michigan native placed first in the 60m hurdles and 400m dash, winning the 60m hurdles in a time of 8.64 seconds. The sprinter sat down with Spectrum to tell us a little bit more about herself. Read on after the jump for the latest installment of “five questions” with this women’s track superstar.
Kyra Caldwell, CC ’12
1. What is your proudest track accomplishment/moment?
Running 57.9 in the 400m hurdles.
2. Do you have a pump-up song? If so, what is it?
I actually don’t listen to music before every race, but there have been a few instances. Niki Minaj’s “Itty Bitty Piggy” got me hyped before Heps one year, and last week I actually was singing Ludacris’s “Move B*$%*” in my head.
3. What’s the best class you’ve taken at Columbia?
African American Prophetic Political Tradition (which I’m taking now).
4. What’s your most embarrassing track/sports story?
Freshman year, I literally jumped out of the blocks so quickly and awkwardly, I ran into the first hurdle and lost the race (and I was actually seeded to win).
5. What TV show would you want to guest star on (and as who)? And why?
I actually would love to be on “Love and Hip Hop,” even though it’s a reality show. I guess I would just be myself.
