WKCR compiles offensive tweets from Columbia football players

In response to football player Chad Washington being charged with a hate crime, WKCR compiled a gallery of 46 tweets from Columbia football players that include disparaging remarks about various sexualities, races, and religions. WKCR distributed the gallery via its Twitter account, where it also notes that some of the players have been deleting their Twitter accounts today.

The gallery includes this tweet from Washington:

Why do Columbia College students regularly create a climate of hate or of disrespect for fellow students?

Agreed. This is a compilation of tweets from 6-7 members out of a team of nearly 100. Spec is unfairly grouping these athletes together. The tweets are offensive and should be looked down upon; however, the title of the article and what is being implied is unfair.

that’s what being a part of a team is for. It isn’t fair, but oftentimes the actions of few can hurt the reputation of many.

The football players all chose to tweet these things. It isn’t slander to repost their racist opinions. They should know that nothing on the internet goes unnoticed for long.

Perhaps. But remember, these are your peers. They go to Columbia, they attend the same classes as you, and they represent our university. So I personally am extremely disappointed and angry to hear these awful things being said by them.

There is no excuse for putting hate speech online, regardless of whether or not the writer is an athlete.

But, these accounts are all followed and referenced by the Columbia Football twitter. An official university account refers directly to these immature, bigoted students. Unfortunately, there are plenty of racists/sexists/homophobes in the world. The real scandal is that the school had access to these tweets and, since they never even chided the players for putting this shit online, is implicitly supporting them.

Columbia talks like it supports all students, but turns a blind eye to this bullshit because the football team gets them press. I hope they like the press they’re getting now.

And of course it’s mostly Blacks coming to his side an claiming the media is being bias because he’s Black, without even considering that maybe he’s already entitled for being a athlete.

The tweets already reveal the type of “tolerance” he shows towards other ethnic groups. Would it be surprising to anyone that a MALE ATHLETE would make any sort of chauvinistic or sexist comment towards women? do men never harass women? If White students made jokes about Black students, like “The Professor turned off the lights and now we can’t see the Black kids”….the Black community would be in UPROAR.

Great all-around guy they say! oh ya, so great he was stupid enough to post tweets to make fun of Asians, right?

But this is just another case of a double-standard in which just because he’s BLACK, he’s a victim and should NOT BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. That’s why race claims have become a joke and playing the race card has become notorious because some people just can’t except and take ACCOUNTABILITY when someone of their own background shows intolerance.

Agreed. If a WHITE 6’4″, 242 pound guy harrassed a 5’7″ BLACK guy and his 2 female black friends, called him “n*gger” and “black p*ssy” and shoved him into the wall, there would be national FUROR. There wouldn’t be dismissive chuckles like, “Boys will be boys,” or “It’s not a big deal,” or “Everyone’s so sensitive.”

Looks like this handful of football self-appointed “Big men on Campus” are not only losers on the field — but off it as well !! Let’s not hold it against the majority of athletes who are not so inclined (or should we, say, demented ?).

I don’t know that we should crucify a whole football team for the actions of a handful, when the average college campus has people calling each other “fag” and saying “no homo” all over… hell… everywhere… Examine the tweets of the entire college and I’m sure you’ll see much, much worse.

    That being said…

When it it ever appropriate to be this biased? You would hope they’d realize after Alexandra Wallace and Samuel Hendrickson that it’s probably not a good idea to put anti-Asian vitriol online, but the stupidity of some people amazes me. I would hate to be them right now.

Next he’ll thank God for all this right? This guy should know first hand about discrimination and racism. Being black or minority in the USA is not easy and he has the nerve to call other minorities racist moments. His actions tell you about his character and well being of others. I hope he learns from his mistakes!

Can’t wait until he’s trotted out in a suit and tie, with a big honkin’ gold cross strategically and prominently placed over said tie. Accompanying him would be his homies from the CU Asian/Pacific American Heritage Board, because that’ll unconditionally prove he’s not a misogynistic racist and have Asian friends. And to make the deal even sweeter would be seen eating at Hunan’s Kitchen, his favorite Chinese restaurant, and then later to Tea Magic, for some crunk Chai tea boba.

I’m actually kind of surprised that the alleged perpetrator’s defense team didn’t wrangle an ASIAN lawyer to represent him, to make-face, “Hey, he’s not really racist against Asians. If he were, would an ASIAN agree to represent him?”
