ZENAWI
Zenawi speech moved as protests loom
By Ben Cotton
Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi is still scheduled to speak at the World Leaders Forum tomorrow at 4 p.m., but Columbia announced earlier this afternoon that the speech has been moved from Low Rotunda to Roone Arledge Auditorium in Lerner Hall. The University declined to comment on the reason for the change, but it is worth noting that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s controversial appearance in 2007 also took place in Roone Arledge rather than Low Library, which is generally the venue of choice for the highest-profile speakers.

“Why we must engage on our Forum” – http://www.columbiaspectator.com/2010/09/20/why-we-must-engage-our-forum
Sara Jacobs and et al.,
Thank you for elaborating the need for freedom of speech and academic freedom in the university environment. However, I’m afraid you have missed the bigger picture of what’s being protested by the Oromo, Ethiopian, Ogadeni and other Ethiopian communities in the Diaspora.
Please make no mistake that the World Leaders Forum (WLF) is being used as a forum by the packagers of Meles Zenawi, a man who is on the watch list of the Genocide Watch (read: http://www.genocidewatch.org/ethiopia.html). The invitation of Meles Zenawi to WLF is not the entire story, and it is not the whole story.
In 2000 a Harvard University forum invited Meles Zenawi – in the month of September – to make a speech. At that time, Abiyu Geleta, who was the spokesperson of the Oromo Liberation Front, one of the rebels fighting the regime of Meles Zenawi, blasted Harvard University for inviting a human rights violator. Abiyu Geleta is a Harvard-educated lawyer (the same department that produced Barack Obama) and he was appalled with the idea of Harvard being used to promote a human rights violator. Read: http://www.oromia.org/News/AG_Letter_to_Harvard_University.htm
And in 2005, the same month of September, a new prize was created by Yara International, called the Yara Prize, to be given to Meles Zenawi as a pioneer of the green revolution in Africa while he’s still a human rights violator. Neither Africa nor Ethiopia have been food secured when he was given such an award; on the contrary, food security in Ethiopia has decreased in Ethiopia under the Meles Zenawi regime of the last 20 years. And, you may ask, what’s Yara Prize up to now? Well, the first prize was awarded to Meles Zenawi, then Yara Prize just disappeared — it’s just a moment of celebration now. Read: http://www.yara.com/sustainability/africa_program/the_yara_prize/prizewinners/index.aspx
And now in 2010, in the month of September, Meles Zenawi is being staged at the World Leaders Forum to speak about the Global Economy or Environment (even this is not clear from the WLF website itself, because the point here is not his speech, but his re-packaging as a “world leader”; otherwise, they would have made sure the subject of his speech is clear from the get-go).
You may ask, what’s common among the 2000 event, the 2005 and the 2010? Well, I’m pretty sure Columbia Spectator has investigative journalists who can do the job better than I do. A distinguished professor at CU (Jagdish Bhagwati) has not leveled the criticism at PrezBo or WLF, but other actors within CU: http://www.ethiopianreview.com/content/29391 – and he was right on the money.
WLF is being used to re-package a human rights violator and an election thief, Meles Zenawi, every five years in the month of September. Do you know that in 2000 he was accused of stealing the election held in May 2000? Do you know that in 2005 he killed more than 200 protesters in Addis Ababa and Oromia to steal the election held in May 2005? Do you know that he just claimed to have won 99.6% of the House of Representatives seats and stole the election held in May 2010?
WLF is not an isolated event. It’s one in a series of engagements held to re-package Meles Zenawi to the peoples in Ethiopia. Believe me, you are not the audience of this engagement nor its target. The audience and the target is the oppressed peoples in Ethiopia in whose defense no one speaks.
I leave you with the wise advice of a wise president, Dwight D. Eisenhower, of the U.S.A. In his farewell speech to the nation, he warned about the military-industrial complex. He worried that, although the industry helped the military revamp for WWII’s victory, their alliance should be put in check. Similarly, although noble causes, such as the environment, the global financial crisis, the Millennium Development Goals, poverty, HIV/AIDS, malaria, are worth fighting for, citizens all over the world should question and be vigilant about funds collected in the fight against these human calamities do not get used to silence political dissents, to wage crimes against humanity, to deny freedom to the voiceless, and to suppress peoples around the world, including Ethiopia.
@@@@@@@@@@
Yes, indeed. The World Leaders Forum website says, Meles Zenawi will speak on “The Current Global Environment and its Impact in Africa”, and if you go to the website of the co-sponsor of the event, the Committee on Global Thought, Meles Zenawi’s keynote speech will be, according to this other website, “The Current Global Economy and its Impact”
- One (WLF) says the Environment: http://www.worldleaders.columbia.edu/events/prime-minister-ethiopia-meles-zenawi
- The other one (the co-sponsor CGT) says the Economy: http://cgt.columbia.edu/events/prime_minister_meles_zenawi_keynote_address/
Guys, this is not an ordinary flap; first, the bio, now what everyone has overlooked so far is exactly what topic will he speak on Sept. 22. Guess what? Even the organizers contradict themselves.
Therefore, stop arguing whether this is a 1st Amendment issue or not. No one has opposed on this “right” to speak, but the protest is on whether the Columbia University and the WLF should be used as a forum to legitimize dictator and tyrant Meles Zenawi.
The CU community will have to decide which side they’ll stand tomorrow as the editorial of this newspaper wrote on Sunday: http://www.columbiaspectator.com/2010/09/19/staff-editorial
My hope is they’ll stand with the oppressed peoples of Ethiopia and be the voice of the voiceless, and expose why CU is being used to promote Meles Zenawi.
The corridors of Columbia University will reek from the odious smell of oppression that surrounds this dictator. His halitosis of ethnic hatred might be disguised by breathmints but Columbia University will NEVER be able to remove the stench of death, pain and sorrow that follows this killer kleptocrat wherever he goes. Cheerleaders Steiglitz and Sachs should be charged with incompetence for inflicting Meles’s odour on Columbia University students. I guess they invited him because they knew Meles is SO RONREY and SADRY ARONE back in Ethiopia.
2disgusted, the only smell we have to worry about is the garbage you are spitting out of your loud mouth like your masters Mengistu or Isayas.
Alem and
There is no difference between Mengistu, Isayas and Meles. They are all Marxist Leninist dictators who rule by the gun without any regard for human life, human rights, and without any knowledge of democracy. The only difference is where they bought their guns, their torcher accessories and uniforms. Indeed evidence shows that Meles is using the same security management structures as the Dergue to stifle the Ethiopian people. Plus ca change. So, You don’t like my comment woyane cadre? Well Suck it up Alemanin suck it up and walk it out because in America there is no Agazee sniper to shoot me in the forehead or any security forces to throw me in jail without a fair trial. You cannot jam this website nor intimidate me as the thousands of Ethiopian journalists are being intimidated everyday in Ethiopia. I REPEAT FREE BIRTUKAN MIDEKSA AND ALL POLITICAL PRISONERS IN ETHIOPIA.
Meles Zenawi, a.k. a. Lady Bla Bla will attend this event wearing the flesh of women &children of the Horn of Africa. His suit of flesh & blood made from Ethiopian&Somali babies will be held together by bones of mothers from Gambella, Sidama, Addis Abeba, Arba Gugu, Bedeno, Mogadishu, & the sundried bones from the Badme war. Lady Bla Bla Zenawi’s shoes are made from the skin of those assassinated by American trained and armed Agazee security forces. He has his own signature aftershave i made from the tears & sweat of those unjustly jailed & torchered by terrorist TPLF ESPECIALLY the tears of Halle Mideksa and her mother Birtukan Mideksa who will one day be free and who should have been invited instead of Meles. FREE BIRTUKAN MIDEKSA!!!
To side with one indivdual dictator is to betray the inncent Ethiopians. A visist arranged to Tigray for the president and the rest is not worth the blood that was spilled by this Animal like muderer.
Why betray the responsiabilty of a presidancy bestwed by the honest citizens given to you Mr. Bollinger!
A man of your caliber should never be twisted by any fool who is trying and partely succedded Idiot hiding under your pit.
Beware Mr Bollinger.
Zenawi has got a lot to answer. If the speaking engagement is going on despite the tons of opposition to it, then hold his feet to the fire. He has done a lot with impunity. Now that he is sitting at the podium as a wise man, probe him with all the relevant questions ranging from his snake oil economics to his fraud in the global warming collusion to his bad human rights record.
Zenawi is no economist to discuss African economics and global economy. He is to blubber the usual ‘capitalism doesn’t work’ talk.
SG
What a hypocrites! Columbia University giving this DICTATOR and BLOOD Sucker an opportunity to speak in this prestigious University based on “Free Speech” cover. The hypocrisy is this dictator doesn’t give a damn about the free speech and is putting people in prison because they express any dissent. I honestly don’t see a point or logic of giving a free speech platform for a dictator who crashes and kills people for simply excericing their free speech?
As University, Columbia should have done an elementary kids reaserch and find out how cruel and double speaker this DICTATOR is. He has done a horrible things to Ethiopians, Somailians and Eritreans and there is no point of listing his atrotices to the University that doesn’t do a basic reaserch and respect HUMANITY.
Shame on President Lee Mr. Bollinger and the organizers. The least you could’ve done is either cancel the event or take accountiblily and responde to the whole Africans (who expressed their dismay at the University) in a press realese or other venues.
One dictator is worthless than tarnishing this Univeristy image and also lossing the respect of Africans and all peace loving people in the world. Do the honourable thing President Bollinger!
Yours,
African Canadian.
When I saw Zenawi’s description on this site a few days ago I knew that this place is filled with people who had no idea about what is going on in Ethiopia. It is really sad for an educational institute.
Have any of the organizers seen the horrific pictures of slain children in the streets of Addis shortly after the May 2005 elections? A few hours before the massacre, Zenawi took control of the army and the security forces. He unleashed terror on the unsuspecting population of Addis by flying in from Tigray a secretly trained commando unit that descended on the people of Addis as if they were a foreign enemy. He is solely responsible for the butchering of those children and all documented (count 200) and undocumented Ethiopians.
How will you feel looking into this guy telling you what he has done for Africa?
Shame on you, Columbia, for dancing with murderers…
Would you have invited a WWII war criminal to explain what his justifications were for building the ovens in Dachau? Everyone has equal rights, you would say.
Apparently, Sir, you are a CONGENITAL LIAR. The fact is the Opposition urged their supporters to go on the streets and engage in a violent riot in order to overturn the will of the people, which indeed resulted in a horrific, violent riot that also cost the lives of many police men. Unfortunately, the police were FORCED to use fatal force since they were not fitted with not-fatal, riot control equipments to defend their own lives as well as preserve the constitutional order.
The primary guilt lies with the Ethiopian opposition party, namely Kinijit, which initiated the violence by ordering their supporters to go into the streets and engage in violent protest., which led to the police reaction to defend their lives.
Hey Justin.
Did you just said the police was FORCED to kill unarmed kids and young protesters? What kind of pathetic liar are you? Even the Investigation Commision set up by the government concluded that the killings were unjustified. You are here to tell us that they were justfied. Shame on you!!
Justin, I really feel sorry for you. How come you try to justify the killing of unarmed civians by the order of the prime minister Meles Zenawi. Most of them were either kids or old people. What if one of them were your family members? Would you still be thinking the same? Or is it just because your family members are from the killers side?
Shame on you for trying to blame the opposition party, which has not even called for that protest. The opposition party has tried to advise the people to stay at home so that Meles does not kill more.
Change your name to Unjustin(ce) since you are denying the very fact confirmed by a commission set up by meles’s regime. The commission’s report uninaimously declared that the Police/army under the direct order of zemawi had used excessive force on peacful demonstrators and no looting or any kind of illegal activities were found. Just because you want to defend your lunatic boss you can’t change the fact that he is a tyrannical despot notorious for killing hundereds of thousands of EPRP members in Assimba; let millions die of starvation due to his direct involvement of embezzelment of Aid money starting before the 1984 starvation and still continues to this day. He is responsible for the civil war in Ethiopia and the first person in Ethiopia’s history to invade a neighbouring country, slaughtering civilians in Somalia; the ogaden; Gambella; Arbagugu; Gonder; Addis Ababa; Hawzen; and numerous regions in Ethiopia. He is the most notorious human being in Ethiopia’s history known for his brutality and silencing any form of dissent. His views are very narrow and would lead to civil unrest for the years to come. Zenawi’s political gamble eventually would end up in making Ethiopia the most unstable nation in the horn since the time of the judges and one that will be ruined due to the misguded policies of the tplf to keep the power in one minority ethnic group, forcing people to join or lose their existence. The foundation of meles’s rule are corrupted and will not sustain the test of time.
It is really sad to see a PM who blocked all free media, internate, newspaper and any demonstration againest his gov. have got the fredom to speak in one of the great university in US.
By now everything that has to be said probably said in many ways. People attempted to alert Columbia University and its leaders to do the right thing on Mr. Zenawi’s expected speech . It appears that all the emails, mails, faxes etc seem to be falling on deaf ears.
What are the criteria’s for selecting your speakers?
Are you trying to add value to the student body at Columbia at large by interacting with your guest speakers on their contribution on leadership?
Knowing who is coming to your home as a guest will help, what to expect and set up the stage and the direction of your conversation or discussion. For this, Columbia University appears to be unaware of your guest or got intellectually lazy to do the basic research. I think that seems to be the outrage you see from all over the world.
As we live in a free society, I do recognize the value of free speech and with that should come a balanced approach for the attendees to ask Mr. Zenawi critical questions on his leadership on all fronts including his repeated theft of elections, trashing of the human rights of Ethiopian citizens, boldfaced lies about economic growth, manipulation of the judiciary for political purposes, unjust incarceration of Birtukan Midekssa, the first woman political party leader in Ethiopian history and tens of thousands of other political prisoners, crackdown on the press and civil society organizations, subversion of the legislative process to mill out repressive laws and his completely bogus theory of “ethnic federalism” (an artifice of his divide-and-rule strategy) and so on.
BeyondComprehension,
Apparently, Sir, you are a CONGENITAL LIAR. The fact is the Opposition urged their supporters to go on the streets and engage in a violent riot in order to overturn the will of the people, which indeed resulted in a horrific, violent riot that also cost the lives of many police men. The primary guilt lies with the Ethiopian opposition party, namely Kinijit, which initiated the violence by ordering their supporters to go into the streets and engage in violent protest., which led to the police reaction to defend their lives.
The opposition never initiated violence, it is the special force (AGAZI) under the order of Meles killed 200 people in a broad day light. Even the self appointed committee by the Prime Minister reported that and no one has been brought to justice. Also over 700 people hurt and over 30,000 youth were kept in camp.
What a lame execuse to say the police “were not fitted with not-fatal, riot control equipments to defend their own lives”. It’s the usual WOYANE justification. Even the PM admitted on one of the foreign interviews that was a bad judgment….
You’re trying to defend the undefendable.
Change your name to Unjustin(ce) since you are denying the very fact confirmed by a commission set up by meles’s regime. The commission’s report uninaimously declared that the Police/army under the direct order of zemawi had used excessive force on peacful demonstrators and no looting or any kind of illegal activities were found. ante banda ye banda lije banda!!!
The dictator Meles has a 35 years old first female part leader for no reason. But he used his kangaroo court for its legitimacy. Now he may claim the imprisonment with rule of law. While the law and the court are under his hands (with his Civil Service college cadres). She has abandoned her five years old daughter and her 80 years old mother. No one is allowed to see her except these two. How on earth that can happen?
Shame for Columbia university to invite a ruthless dictator. Mugabe is by far the best leader. Mugabe is hated by the westerns because he speak the same. Meles has more than one personality when he speak for western, for Ethiopian people, for his ethnic group.
All peace loving people should be able to listen to each other and resolve their differences instead of using the old tired false accusations to shame inoccent hard working people to deny them their right to speak. It is sad some have even gravitated to besmerging the name of the great intitution of learning Columbia Univ., its president and the other esteemed professors with the intention of intimidiating them to change their decision which is absured.
Centers of exelence in education should be able to lead in trushing out contoversial ideas and give an opportunity for researchers and critics the forum to examin speaches and ideas which in turn will open for greator knowledge and understanding.
It is sad this days that few exremists among us, in every country and university campus want to dictate their own will on others, sensure others from free speach and target others for having differing views from them. Universities in particular the leaders like Columbia should be able to host controversial people to bring light to the issues that divide which in turn may wave a dialoge to a consenses to agree or disagree in the views expressed. How could it be right to deny free speach? Even known criminals and mass murderers are heared and I am confident people who have few grey mater between their ears can sift betwen junk and substance.
It is not surprising that the few that want to hold us hostage by intimidation are the very once that cry faul and injustice mostly decrying that their rights are violated, and appoint them selves to represent us and cry for us, and yet true to their nature do the exact thing they object about, namely fight to take away the right of others to free speach.
They live in USA but can not learn that democracy and inparticular the 5th amendment of the constitution guarants free speach to all in this blessed land.
Mr.Meles is a leader of a country emerging from a backward political system where violence , murder and oppression was the MOI of the previous regims. The opposition who mostly were armed have also commited heneous crime including wadging urban gorila fighting and terrorism. Those actors of the seventies and eighties, when I was in my early teens are now living in USA. These same murdrers who were members of the military totlitarian government which was deposed by the Mr. Meles lead fighters have become successful in the land of great opprtunity with out revealing their identity and they have used the liberty granted by this magnanimous nation to undermine the democratization process in Ethiopia. They use their newly earned right and money to subvert the hard work that has been going on to reverse the injustice that was commited by the previous governments.
This is wrong.
Good try! But you’re not fooling anyone by attempting to articulate your ideas. The FACT is contrary to what you have stated. We agree in the freedom of speech and that’s why we’re voicing on behalf of the millions of Ethiopians.
Mr. Meles has been in power for the last 20 years under the cover of “democracy”. He is neither democrat nor understand the concept of democracy. He is out there to keep his power at any cost, by cracking any opposition to his control. he utilized divide-and-rule for the last twenty years and continue to do so.
Just because you talk about others does not make the TRUE problem go away.
Get Real
It’s apparent the EXTREMISTS are against free speech for they have no respect for people’s rights. These Extremists support and work hand in hand with Isayas Afewerki, the President of Eritrea who has never held elections and is a sponsor of state terrorism, while railing against PM Meles, who has been duly elected by the Ethiopian people if in free and fair election
Justin,
Please keep Esayas out of this discussion. Save that for another day and another topic. This is typical WOYANE tactic. when the going gets tough, CHANGE THE SUBJECT….
You attempt to label people for sharing their views as EXTREMISTS … You may label whatever you desire, but the FACT is always the FACT.
Please name me a leader who is dully and TRULY elected and have this much opposition on his appearance to make a speech at any University?
You should be ashamed to claim a Free and Fair elction occured in Ethiopia.
dedeb!!!! we are ethiopians and we will fight for our freedom!!!!
You need to change your name to Unjustin(ce). you are denying the very fact confirmed by a commission set up by meles’s regime. The commission’s report uninaimously declared that the police/army under the direct order of zemawi had used excessive force on peacful demonstrators (The Commission reported also at EU and the US Congress/Judges Ferehiwot Samuel and Woldemichael Meshesha). No looting or any kind of illegal activities were found. Just because you want to defend your lunatic boss you can’t deny that he is a tyrannical despot notorious for killing hundereds of thousands of EPRP members in Assimba (Yenetsanet Goh Siked/Birhanu nega); millions die due to his direct involvement of Aid money embezzelment, which started before the 1984 starvation and still continues to this day (the BBC). zemawi is responsible for the civil war in Ethiopia, and for the hundreds of thousands of death in the war with eritrea under his rule. meles is the first person in Ethiopia’s history to invade a neighbouring country. zemawi is known for slaughtering civilians in mass in Somalia; the ogaden; Gambella; Arbagugu; Gonder; Addis Ababa; Hawzen; and other numerous regions in Ethiopia (Amnesty International/Genocide Watch). He is the most notorious human being in Ethiopia’s history known for his brutality and silencing any form of dissent (recent victims Birtukan Mideksa and Addis Neger Publishers). Zenawi’s political gamble eventually would end up in making Ethiopia the most unstable nation in the horn since the time of the judges and one that will be ruined due to the misguded policies of the tplf to keep the power in one minority ethnic group (over 90% of the economic and military leadership positions are held by tigreans which account to 4% of the total population), forcing people to join or lose their existence (need to be a member of the party or lose all servies including education and employment or even aid). The foundation of meles’s rule are corrupted and will not sustain the test of time.
What can Zenawi teach the world after misruling and abusing power for the last two decades? Is he sharing his experience of killing 200 innocent and unarmed civilians for poll protest? Or is he teaching freedom of the press where he is categorized as Africa’s worst abuser of the press. After all he is the one who openly declared to jam The Voice of America Broadcasting service.
Two decades in power Ethiopia under Zenawi is the purest country in the world next to Niger. It is a shame that Ethiopia’s economic situation is even worst than Somalia.
Al-amoudi the big Ethio-Saudi investor is behind this event.”when money speaks the truth is silent”some crucial informations are start to out from insider. I hope further investigation will follow concerning the relation-ship between CU presidant(Administrative body) and Zenawi,Alamoudi and …
We have to fight corruption!
Peace Up on U! I think its better to listen what one has as an argument mere hate and vocalism didn’t prove ones as a genuine democrat. So let listen what is to be delivered @ the podium argue, ask and disagree if not convincing alas…..
Thanks for been recognize Ethiopia as an important country, and thanks for the president of Columbia to invite our Pm Meles Zenawi, and I want to thank you him to his practicing democracy in Ethiopia, but I want to say sorry for the people who is dictator living in USA and even don’t have any idea what is the ground fact in ethiopia. Most of the opposition who is barking in diaspora even the never been in Ethiopia for the last 30 years, and they are trying to say something like they are living in Ethiopia. Therefore they are not represent ethiopian. they just barking like a dog. the only represent our beloved Ethiopia is PM Meles Zenawie who was struggled the whole his life for that country from his young age to this time, but people like who was living the whole their life in diaspora and try to have power by sitting and dreaming are try to confused the University and the whole the world.
Very disturbing to put unqualified statements without taking facts into considerations. Meles is invited through the works of Jeffrey Sachs NOT because he is a qualified world leader. He is qualified to lead under the barrell of the GUN and done so by terrorizing the Ethiopian people for the last twenty years.
I have been to Ethiopia few months ago and what I saw on the ground is the harrassment of security apparatus on every corner of the country, especially in big cities. If that is what you call democracy, I am not sure what you need to be doing here in the west… Please go back to Ethiopia and enjoy your so called Democracy. I feel so ashamed for people of your intellect to come out here on the website of Columbia Spectator and make unqualified and baseless statements.
to justin and askhabtu
speak the truth you narrow tribalists and/or dogs of dictator
Once again, CU newspaper used two complex personalities (an Eritrean & another african from elsewhere) that do not have enough knowledge on Ethiopia to erode the opposing comments about Self appointed Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. In addition, CU news paper used an excuse of Meles Zenawi’s human rights abuses and pinpointed that it is all about the Global Environment, like Meles is not destroying Ethiopians and their environment.
Under his orders, the government is building the largest hydro-dam (Gil-Gil Gibe dam) in Africa which will displace local ethnic groups of off their habitats and destroy the livelihood they have cherished for thousands of years. This dam will destroy the lives of innocent people and deprive them of their daily food which they have depended on for centuries from the water bodies the dam is being built on. Is this what Mamadou Diouf wants to tells us about Meles Zenawi and his global agenda? For all we know Mamadou is an indirect mercenary, maybe prominent at CU but means diddley to us Ethiopians. Where is the ethics CU? inviting a butcher of people and the environment to a prominent US University? Shame to CU and Mamadou who thinks he is smart enough to outsmart us?
Can someone please tell Columbia Spectator that their website is now BLOCKED from being viewed in Ethiopia.! Please ask them to check if they wish. It is blocked at least as of noon Ethiopia Time.
Columbia Spectator works fine in Ethiopia as of now
efrem, justin, zeleke askhabtu. i will pray for you all to return to your mind. during 1997 election i was a witness and i was in ethiopia hear when meles came on the etv and order that all military forces are under his comand and the next day there were 193 people dkilled by agazi force under his order. this was proofed by the independent investigation group that he personaly elected. it is not an ETHIOPIAN way covering such a fact. no onris against his fredom of speech equvalent to that he has to take risponsibility for those killed under his direct order.
you i mension your name on top you have a right to support the killer meles for a while until it comes on you MELES NOT ONLY ON YOU HE USED AND THROW ABOY SIBHAT LIKE A CHEWING GUM. HOPE YOU WILL RETURN TO YOUR MIND SOON.
LET OUR GOD BLESS OUR LOVELY COUNTRY ETHOIPIA AND HELP TO STRONG THE SPIRIT OF OUR HERO BIRTUKAN MEDEKS AND LETOUR GOD BLESS POLITICAL PRISONERS THOUSANDS IF NOT MILLION IN WOYANE JAIL.

I thank the Coloumbia Spectator for exposing this vicious dictator, killer and looter. You are a real spectator becoming a voice for the voiceless millions of Ethiopians. People like Zenawi should have lived back in the times of Hitler, who used to divide people according to their skin color and race. Meles, the number one racist of the modern times, has secluded and destroyed the lives of millions of Ethiopians who don’t belong to his ethnic group and party.
The Coloumbia university president has been cheated by some of his advisors. He has been cheated by Sachs, who runs a project in the birth place of Mr Zenawi. I think it is time for the uni and students to tell Prof Sachs the truth that he can’t abuse academic freedom and freedom of speech to gain some personal advantage
All coments are from the previous government leaders”derg”. They are still trying to put fire in the country. Go PM Meles zenawi
The dumbest comment ever. Just because people oppose your view, all of them will not be previous government leaders or members. It clearly shows your logical reasoning and judgment. With this kind of judgment, it is obvious why your blinded support to PM Meles.
7Torga emmgbwnhenpw
i didn’t even lived in derge times. but i stand for freedom and opposses any dictatorial act like meles do. does that make me a derge cadere?
ColumbiaSpectator.com is blocked in Ethiopia according to my sources. If it indeed happened, it is a proof that how the Dictator treats the press & the right of Ethiopian ppl for free flows of information.
Please check if your website is blocked!
Free Birtkan & all other political prisoners!
The president of Columbia does not invite this murdere if who have been killed were white. The West does not about the destruction of the Black people. Mr. Bollinger, in the name of free speech you justify terrorism and genocide on the Oromos, Amharas, Somalis, Gambelas, Afars, etc. You are supporting fascism and terrorism in Ethiopia. You are a shameless white man. You have no moral and ethical values. You are blinded by the power of your presidency.
The world cannot be at peace with itself because of Meles and people like you. You are trash of history like Hitler and his supporters.
The first thing to get the targt you have to identify the root of the truth. Because it seems to me that to convince the peoples struggle is the best policy and based on tangeble realities. Now you can kill the enemies with ful confidence.
CU;s invitation of Meles is ok. CU has invited Ahmedinajad and He spoke here. The university is also putting on some one worse and some one better in killing the innocent and the poor. The University didn;t know that Melese’s wife own’s a 6,000,000.00 mansion in Potomac, MD. The University doesn’t know that Meles and his wife and his friends are looters and have amassed more than 1000 times of all African thiefs. They only lead a dureye or street smart bandits who can speak to the deaf and can dance to the blind. Well, it’s nice to see the CU president s one of the above..Deaf or Blind!!
what is all the cry about?
I am not a CU college student, not from Ethiopia. I am just surprised that many of you are opposed to Mr. Zenawi ‘ s speech at Columbia’s global leaders forum. What’s wrong with Mr. Zenawi’s speech as a country leader of Africa? Do you think that the stage should be all reserved for Westerner’s or for leaders from countries you like? In terms of oppression, how many countries in the world don’t have rules or regulations? If you protest in front of white house or somewhere else, American police will come to protect you but not arrest you, W. Bush will come to listen to you? When you mentioned the killing of other countries( i don’t support killing ) why nobody cares about how many people were killed in Iraq in the past 8 years based on lies. What are the responsible doing right now? I am telling you, they are enjoying the very good life with their unlimited fortune earned from the blood of other people. Taxpayers also have to build a library for them even their failed ruling brought the county even the world into the financial disaster. You are either stupid or biased. Don’t assume you can publish what you want to say in any American media if your thoughts or ideas are not in consistent with political tones of Interests group or ruling class.
Finally , I ‘d like to tell you : opposition to the speech of Mr. Zenawi itself contradicts to your faith of ” Freedom of Speech”. It is irony!
Just ask PM
‘Can someone please tell Columbia Spectator that their website is now BLOCKED from being viewed in Ethiopia.! Please ask them to check if they wish. It is blocked at least as of noon Ethiopia Time’
Just ask PM why block internet media in Ethio. that by him self it will be the answer
……”Can someone please tell Columbia Spectator that their website is now BLOCKED from being viewed in Ethiopia.! Please ask them to check if they wish. It is blocked at least as of noon Ethiopia Time”…
Shame on you President of COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY.
I am sure Your university teaches about human right and democracy but you are inviting the number one enemy of humaa right and anti-democracy. This emplies that you don’t care about the death of black Africans as far as US interst is not affected.
I say again shame on you
Warraqsaa, from Sweden
If I were a PM of a small poor country, and i am trying to bring food, development and health to millions, and if most of the “elites” “educated” country men and women who have not attempted to go to their roots and help out, but infact had pre-formed ideas, and with no courage, or conviction want to wage war on my poor country from the comfort of their bed rooms or a “prestigious” university, such as this one- I would block its website as it is a national security issue, as it would have given these undesrving people the right to live in a place like NYC, and a hand to determine the fate of millions. FDR, LIncoln, and Washington would have done it too!! Learn from history…
The current PM, though, went beyond that, he brought the fight to you. So shout yell, and jump from the comfort of your homes, he is here amidst you and not afraid to stand his ground, Who is the man, now?
He is a leader of a poor country and making the people and country much poorer than anyone can imagine by looting its wealth to a personal and family gain, at any cost.
What’s wrong challenging someone?
Talk about the beliver of free speech on one side of your mouth and say ” I would block its website as it is a national security issue, ”
Do NOT fear ideas….
Mr Concerned ethiopian, I can accuse you of stealing too, you know? With out an iota of evidence, because accusation is all it takes to make it stick. And if you talk about free speech, you know, even an “accused” man has the right to speak here in the US. But more importantly the idea of Free speech even in this great country has stayed an idea for some people for a long time, it didn’t become a reality overnight.
The PM is bringing ” Ideas,” prey tell, what are you afraid of?
Still, who is the man? now
who is the man?
1. BIRTUKAN MIDEKSA!! (political leader jailed for life by TPLF) that’s who..
2. SERKALEM FASIL (journalist arrested by woyane gave birth in prison) , that’s who…
3. LELISE WODAJO .(journalist still jail) that’s who
4. SHIBIRRE DESSALEGN (young student shot by agazee helping other students escape from mass arres)t that’s who,
5. AMARECH GELANE, (election observer shot to death by agazee)
this is just a short list of ETHIOPIAN HEROES considered much more of a man than your midget Meles by MILLIONS OF ETHIOPIANS. Don’t ask questions you don’t like the answers to comrade cadre..
The opposition party and extremist Diaspora have been against the Government for decades. They have been proven that they have no point. They continue to protest PM Meles Zenawi because they will get USA green card if only they protest. Majority of the extremist diaspora in US and Canada are illiterate and most of them had involved in RED TERROR during fascist communist of old government. This is absolutely truth that everyone in Ethiopia knows it. I wonder when they will contribute useful work for the poverty society of their own family and people.
They think they are democrat people however they are always against and they have never challenged the existing goverment in any meeting or conference.

I believe inviting the Ethno fascist leader Meles at Colombia is an insult for the majority of Ethiopians because the Mele’s minority Tigrean (with population of 5%) region known for its brutality and corruption did numerous inhuman crimes against its people. For example for those of you western academician who’re the enabler of this dictator this a guy who the first thing when he came to power dismissed 42 well seasoned Addis Ababa university professors as part of its ethnic cleansing agenda and also massacred peaceful Addis Ababa university student protestors in 1991 & 2000. Also in 2005 the Mele’s minority ethnic apartheid government stole the election by killing, and sending thousand peaceful protesters against its vote rigging to concentration camps and repeated rigged and stole the people voice in 2010.Commited genocide against the Anuak people in Ethiopia gambela region. Also, in the Economic sector the Mele’s ethnic Apartheid government stole public funds also created multiple mega companies under EFFORT tigrean minority controlled company to control every sector of the country’s economy. Also the Meles minority ethnic apartheid government which the SHAME of humanity profited by begging from donor countries to become a billionaire. So unless this is hypocrisy this criminal guy deserves to be guest at Colombia University? If there is no double standard in democracy and human right by western enablers such as Professor Joseph Stiglitz and Jefrey Sacs and Colombia University this guy’s invitation should be the Hag criminal court. So I will say Colombia University SHAME ON YOU!
Take a look at http://www.ethiopiantragedy.com and check out some of the Democratic PM Meles credentials those qualified him as a favorite of Professor Joseph Stiglitz and Jefrey Sacs. I think they let him have the forum as a key note speaker of Colombia University as a favor.
Your ignorance of the crimes of the Democratic PM Meles is amazing. I wonder how much he will pay you for your favors when that day comes and you become his consultants to help him keep cooking his economic data?
Shame on you Professor Joseph Stiglitz and Jefrey Sacs!!!
To those None Ethiopian people who might fellow this News; Don’t get confused by these criminal propaganda’s!
These people who are campaigning against PM Meles ; all are remnants of the previous dictator DERG and Hailesilasie regime.
those regimes have made so many damages to Ethiopia. they are still hiding, in US and Europe. they are still working 24/7 to get back in power and continue their damage. they do not care about Ethiopia!
these are bunch of people who get excited if some thing wrong happen to Ethiopia. these are a bunch of people who get disappointed if they see any progress in Ethiopia. these are the people who run all around the Donors Door to stop giving Aid for the needy Ethiopians.
my point to the none Ethiopian following this news, don’t get confused. you can get all the facts easily. there are so many books written by none Ethiopian, about Ethiopia.
SHAME ON COLUMBIA!!!!!!!!!!…
FOR REAL…go to ethiopia..and live like an ordinary ethiopian..and experiance how horrific this person is……i am so so sad!!!!!
Third eye – Freedom of speach? Why not invite Binlaen in the name of freedom of speach and listen to his horrific ideas? Let me put it in layman term, Meles is Ethiopias Binladen!!!!
Epfrem and the baby woyanne justin the only thing i admired from your likes of peoples is that you had a very bad childhood and most probably being raised by zenawi like parents so that you are becoming die hard in everything bad like lies cheat evil crime giving false witness for court ,but i can assure you all your dance would be short lived and you will be hunted down from every corner and face justice and wont be no other by your boss the pathological lier of the century zenawi,
his fate wont be no other than charles taylor or sadam ,mussolini or hitler .Having said that it was very outrageous to invite this killer to these renowed university that could bring its known and respected name very low by Ethiopians at home and around the world
It is due to the gambling intelectuals that the world is being highly volatile and the suffering opf the poor reached the climax!!!
I’ll not be suprised any more if Columbia University invite Kim Il Sung of North Korea to speak infront of the Columbia intellectuals. Intellectuals became egoist and selfish in the world we live. If you are paid by lobbist ..you do everything in America. In the name of free speach and democrasy ..the dictators are given opportnity to speak in America. My big question is ..are the dictators like Zenawi and Ahmedi of Iran has to tell us how to kill press and human being or what can we want to listen from such blood suckers . Sorry America a country of JFK, Abrham Lincoln..martin L.King George Washington to invie such dictator to your country.
God Bless America and her true defenders of Democrasy and Sham to Columbia University
Tommorrow and Today and the day after……..Meles Zenawi steal Brith and Innocents and poor people are dying by communist Meles Zenawi. Wow……21st Century is has this kind of murderer on the street.
Deep thhogut! Thanks for contributing.

I is really a humiliation for the fame of the University of Columbia to invite Meles Zenawi,
a Fashist, Racist and a killer Mafiosi in one person. Your invitation has nothing to do neither with Freedom of Expession nor with Academic Freedom.
Mr. J.Sachs, Mr. L.C. Bollinger, and Mr. J. Stiglitz, in all three of you, I see one common thing:- German origin (NAZI PAST???)
Dear Sirs, I see no other reason why you associate yourself with this genocidier. I wish you all three that your children and grand children to live under him.
Dog will bark for his owner who feed him……..everyday until he became a short of hand.
I am very embarassing on some people who are pretending to show the royality to Meles Zenawi. I do know Prime Minister Meles Zenawi Century years ago at Winget Comprhensive High School. He was the Most radical leftist and steal the same Meles Zenawi. Birtukan Mideksa is, a Mother of a small baby, a Clean Sharp and Smart, loyal to her country and her people. Birtukan and other Ethiopians hero are suffering in the prison for no reason. The scared too death Meles and his aliens Murdered all kind of ethnic human being around Ethiopia. No one can hidde that. Meles Zenawi is not a person who believe in God and doesn’t care weather any human being killed or arrested, as long as he is on the power. The Marxist and exrimist doesn’t have normal thinking, because they are thinking that every single day is counts on them which is true. His small dogs are pretending by barking around him but the Majority says you are a garbage collector and bathroom cleaner. Nelson Mandela would be an example of freedom fighter. Birtukan, your sense of humor, determination and dedication for your people will be remain as history forever. They are eating and go to the Bath room 20 times a day but they are not happy like you. The history rejected them and now they are even confused which let them to get married each other cousin to cousin, brothers to Sisters. This is what happen when small people doesn’t have any trust and confidence with their own people. History will tell and wait and see.
How many more children.mothers, eldern , human right advocates and Journalists Zenawi have to butcher before the Whole World condemned his criime and recognize him as the Worst Genocider in the last two decades ???? , Its well recorded and documented fact that Meles Zenawi Committed a crime against humanity ,Apparently the Colombia Elites must agree with his evil deeds to Ethiopia and Ethiopians Since 1991
Same on Columbia U!
Shame on President Lee, Prof Sach and Prof Joseph!
Am speechless and again SHAME on three of YOU.
My only wish is, PLEASE stay out of Africa once and for all!
We are capable of solving our problems…
LISTEN TO ALL YOU HATERS, DON’T JUST BE HATER BECAUSE THIS PM IS THE BEST LEADER THAT ANY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD CAN HAVE. WHY DO YOU ALL HAVE TO BE A SULFISH ITS TIME TO GET MATURED. I AND THE WHOLE ETHIOPIAN PEOPLE KNOWS THAT HIS EXCELENCE LEADERSHIP TOOK US TO A HIGH LEVEL OF DEVELOPMENT AND IF THIS FACT DIDN’T SATISFY YOU GO AND HANG YOUR SELF. GO OUT AND CRY IN THE COLOMBIA STREET WHILE THIS BRELIANT LEADER MAKES IMPORTANT HISTORICAL SPEECH EVER!!! WERADA LEBA HULA INATACHIHUN LIBDAT BIACH ASS NIGGAS.
Nigga! The foundation of meles’s rule are corrupted and will not sustain the test of time.
daniel,
When captured red handed and in panic all donkeys fart LOUD. Keep getting outraged and keep farting until you find yourself in the usual cage reserved for murderer dictators and their running ass hole dogs like you.
Colombia could have better speakers from leaders of other African Countries like Ghana, Sieera Leaone; Malawi or any other better performing and democracies, rather than inviting one being charged by Genocide Watch to be at the Hague with the likes of CharlosTaylor. meles is a tyrant who imprisoned a young, popular, articulate and principled judge whose crime was telling the truth which he forgot declared monthes before her second incarceration in his news conference at the release of opposition leaders. zemawi is responsible for the plight of hundreds of thousands of political prisoners still languishing in the notorious tplf jails and killing of peaceful demonstrators in the aftermath of the 2005 election, the very fact confirmed by a commission set up by his own regime. The commission’s report uninaimously declared that the police/army under the direct command of zemawi had used excessive force on peacful demonstrators (The Commission reported also at EU and the US Congress/Judges Ferehiwot Samuel and Woldemichael Meshesha). Though Ethiopans in Ethiopia are bound and gagged by Zenawi’s repressive regime Ethiopian Americans can describe the terror of that tyranny for them. Today Ethiopian Americans stated the Ethiopian peoples outrage for them when the PERP Meles Zenawi came to Columbia cloaking his crimes in clothes borrowed from Stiglitz and Sachs who tried to make him more respectable. WE SAID NO!! YOU HEARD US i for one stop to pledge allegiance to the flag under which this protest was made possible. NO Thanks America for the Nightmare that is Meles but Thank you America for the American Dream, for the forefathers who who gave us the dream of POWER TO THE PEOPLE. We cannot thank the US govts that create and keep killer puppets like Meles in power but we can thank the American forefathers of the US constitution with the principles and laws that keep power in perfect balance and constant check to avoid dictatorship and bad governance such as that in Ethiopia Meles Zenawi’s courrpt brutal Ethnic Apartheid system in Ethiopia WILL FALL and ETHIOPOIANS WILL REMEMBER Columbia University’s shameful invite! Goodybe..
Take it easy everyone. I have 6 family to take care of, but couldn’t even manage to handle and make everyone happy. Prime Minister Meles Zenawi is One lonely person but how many of us do we know that??. The only issue I have is, about Birtukan Medeksa and Political Prisonors who are suffering in the jail cell. How we can make them free? personally..dialogue and good communication with Ethiopian Government can bring peace and freedom for our people.
We can makes things worst or better. I don’t mean that never tried anything, but how much we gave security trust to Ethiopian Government? Lets be honest. Do you really need to give independent to East part of Ethiopia (Ogaden region) to those who doesn’t believe or rejected that they are not Ethiopian and Ogaden is not part of Ethiopia?.
We defenitely have political issue about one group monopolized the power for twenty years, I donb’t have any problem to be concern or to request to transfer the power to the next party.
But, we have to be concern about serious issues that will make us instruments to be used by other groups like Shabia in the past. We have the right to use our democracy voice to spread very fairly but at the same time we have to watch those dangerous who are trying get advantage on us to seperate from our Country.
I do admire Ethiopian Government the way they handle around the Ogaden region, which Ethiopian can not fallen a part slightly after Eritrea. Strongly continue to Demonstrate behalf of our political prisonors, at the same time do not open your door to those who doesn’t believe that they are not Ethiopian. I thought we had enough……and learn a lasten.
Mr. Zenawi, Please pass the Power to the next generation, it is not funny to look your self in the palace for 20 years….You are a prisonor too.
These few coterie diehards are of no significance in the face of Unflinching force of development who have in clear terms told them ,”you do not deserve our votes, you are irrelevant to our progress, rather you’re much of a disgrace.” PM Meles is a pride. He leads the torch of progress with his vision fixated at eradicating poverty. The Ethiopian people have blessed him with their votes. Hopefully the vociferous few diasporas wil come to realize the power of the Ethiopan people with more of their heavy handed rejection through their votes in the future.
Now it can be assumed almost assuredly that even the so called educated …who claim to be teaching in some institutions are accustomed to telling full of lies about Ethiopia and its leaders. The only and most important factor that these few vocal diasporas are rejected by the Ethiopian majority is the unsubstantiated lies, hear say, they spew via their cheap websites. The cardinal point the do not understand is the very fact that the Ethiopian people are very proud people who value their culture highly and are ready to defend their integrity. These few diasporas in their quest to quench their power mongering have tresspassed and intruded on to the integrity component that which is highly regarded. This is where the conflict is, b
between us the Ethiopians and them, who don’t like a shining face of Ethiopia. EThiopians are very protective of the land they guarded with their blood and now want to change it. The people on the ground are the facts, are the witnesses, doers and beneficiaries. It has to be swallowed by these naive coterie vocal diasporas that they being told they don’t know much about what is going on in Ethiopia. In short the Ethiopian people don’t like any thing bad spoken about their devoted leaders and their motherland Ethiopia.
Tesfalem,
You sound like you’re shouting on a vacant house. The party is over and go home. The message to Columbia University and the world was delivered. Your revered “LEADER” left naked and now more people know his dictatorial leadership than a week ago. Even, the president of Columbia was ashamed to stand next to him and had to dodge for the provost.
A key note speaker for 20 minutes …EH…. You can put lipstick on a pig, It’s still a pig.
Sachs & Stringer try to enhance Meles’s image, but it did not work.
The truth the matter is, Meles embarassed in front o the Millions of people. You can tell that he showed in his face some thing is wrong going on. Shame…face looks Bloon that will exploed soon I think that could be Sugar/diabetics or Calestrol. His heart bounced 600 times per second that heard it to loudly and his eyes keep rolling and rolling around the celling…since he was so panic. I thought he even pee on his pant.
Ato Zenwai..That what they felt our people whose are in the prison by you. I wish I could eat you for my dinner that day but I hate to Vomit. Your dirty mouth that threatned my people was leak too much enzyme…and small blood. You ashemed your self again and I hope we will see you next year and you will collapsed by God miracle in front of my people.
Concerned Ethiopian,
You singing the same hollow and shallow songs. We already know you and your coy. are disrupters rather than concerned. You are minute hickups on the bumpy road, as time goes you will be dumped in the dust bins of history, while Ethiopia will revive and advance in its endevours. PM Meles has accomplished his
mission. More or less time spent on his speech has no relevance to your assumptionist lost political belief. As usuall, you always miss the point, and at this time more than any time ever you lost it; because the silent majority has confronted you head on and hence forth it won’t be easy for you to hoodwink any one. We have witnessed your disgression on your “reknowned” website called “ethiomedia” which always posts irrelevant pictures from here and there could not post more so this time because more conscious individuals rejected the already few diaspora opposition.
Tesfalem,
Please, use Tiner to clean your dirty mouth and drink Anti Freezer then you will Z….i….p.
Solomon Tekalegne,
A loser kiss asser…You looked a well feed Pig……… .Mame…what’s going on Baby. Can I visit you some times next week in Addis?. You wear the right shirt, that what I thought.
