U.S. News & World Report’s best colleges: Columbia’s #4

Last year, Columbia surprised everyone by climbing to #4 in U.S. News & World Report’s list of the best colleges in America. This year…well, it’s really more of the same. USNWR ranks us at #4 for the second year in a row.

Also reminiscent of last year and every year before it: Harvard, Princeton, and Yale top the list. Whatever. It’s fine.

Here’s the top 10 of 2012:

5. MIT
5. Stanford
5. U. Chicago
5. U. Penn
10. Duke

On this year’s list of the best liberal arts colleges in the country, strong and beautiful Barnard fared significantly worse. It currently sits at #33, a 7-spot free fall from #26 in 2011.

    Columbia should be ranked ahead of Princeton and Yale by now, however US News data is two years behind. Columbia’s number of applicants and SAT scores zoomed ahead of Princeton and Yale the last couple of years, and it’s low admit rate is only beaten by Harvard (6.2 vs 6.4%).
