The one eleven

Sex, crime, and Michael Caine

It’s late. You’re up. I started writing this on an overheated bus, and I am finishing it back home in New York. The one eleven is still on.

Columbia stuff

Prof Quote Watch: Director of American Studies Andrew Delbanco, who gave a critical speech calling for changes at Columbia this fall, also has opinions about other colleges, suggesting that institutions of higher education expand (whether overseas, or to Roosevelt Island) when they are worried about their sustainability.

Lawsuit: Hilda Hutcherson, a professor at Columbia University Medical Center, is suing drug maker Semprae Laboratories for using her likeness to advertise a women’s sex drug without her permission.

New York news

Breakfast Boycott: Several Muslim leaders are planning on skipping Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s annual interfaith breakfast in protest of what they say is unfair treatment of Muslims at the hands of the city’s police department.

Missing money: The city is losing out on millions of dollars that should be helping to educate children with special needs, because it has not been able to properly document its claims.

A safer city(?): The murder rate is down, but felonies are up in NYC.

Something funny

A British gentleman introduced me to the work of Steve Coogan while I was on vacation, so you’re getting Michael Caine impressions today.
