Seniors, these are your Class Day speaker options (UPDATED)
Check your inboxes, class of 2011! CCSC senior class president Sean Udell has sent out an email asking you to figure out which important Columbia-related people you want to invite to say inspiring things at Class Day! You can vote for five of the following people, including your top choice—the official Google spreadsheet survey thing is here. (Obama’s not on the list, but yes, they’re working on inviting him. I guess they figured he’d be most people’s first choice.) The (other) nominees are:
- Richard Axel
- Marcus Brauchli *
- Lanny Breuer
- Ric Burns
- Alexandra Wallace Creed
- Julius Genachowski *
- Sen. Judd Gregg
- Pres. Toomas Hendrik Ilves
- Jodi Kantor
- Ann Kornblut
- Li Lu
- Terrence McNally
- Michael Mukasey *
- Anna Paquin
- Elizabeth Rubin
- Julia Stiles
- Ray Suarez
After receiving input from seniors, CCSC’s going to narrow down the options to five people, whom they’ll poke on Facebook and pass notes to in class and whatnot.
* These people are Spectator alumni. Just sayin’.
UPDATE (3:15): Word is that Obama would speak at University Commencement, not CC Class Day, were he to come. That’d be an exception to the rule that the University president is the featured speaker at Commencement every year, but if there were ever going to be an exception, this would probably be it. This is still in the works, though—no further details yet.
Oh spare us from Obama. No one at Columbia knew him anyway.
is the president. it doesn’t matter if no one “knew him anyway.”
Judd Gregg is a traitor.
also, what’s with the butler reference?
im rooting for ray suarez.
who the fuck are these people
don’t hate
…their bios are linked above, and that they were included in the email.
I think his point was that they’re not really well known people (aside from sen. gregg, but who wants him anyway?)
we had mccain, didn’t we?
write in Gary Shteyngart!! (Yeah, I know he isn’t an alum, but he does teach here. And hey, if we could have John McCain…)
get serious
Li Lu dude
Suarez FTW
who? who?
suarez
indeed
No transfers, please :-)
name or comment?
or…emoticon?
Hello :)
Obama was a transfer to Columbia
When we could have Leeloo, the smokin’ hot half-naked chick from The Fifth Element?
I didn’t go to Columbia.
fifth element is such a good movie
suarez we want suarez
just saw him speak for this american studies thing, it was mad good
i’ve heard of four of the people on the list before: gregg, mukasey, stiles, and suarez. and the only one i’d be interested to listen to is suarez.
li lu????
speakers blow. richard wald and max frankel would be a great class day duo.
plz
i’m surprised how few people are interested in li lu considering he’s going to be first among equals of the lead people at berkshire after buffet’s retirement
suckkkkkkks
I want Judd Gregg, because I like extra consonantss.
that’s actually pretty cool..
What about Eric Holder? Why isn’t he on the list? I think i’d be much more interested to hear form him than from an actual elected politician who would probably make the speech more about party platform than anything else, no?
