prezbo!

Oh, the ’80s

C-SPAN

In a fit of mid-break boredom, we were combing the new video archives over at C-SPAN.org when we came across this gem. In September 1987, when most of today’s senior class wasn’t even born, a very dapper-looking Lee Bollinger, then dean of the law school at the University of Michigan, went to Congress and kicked ass.

Specifically, the ass of Robert Bork, whom Reagan had nominated to the Supreme Court that year. Bollinger testified against the nominee, basically saying that Bork believes the First Amendment is limited only to political speech—kind of leaving, you know, all sorts of painters, writers, and other people with things to say out in the cold.

OK, so it’s a little dry, but what did you expect from C-SPAN? In any case, we’ve highlighted the good parts.

1:48 – Gaffe machine and then-Sen. Joe Biden interrupts the beginning of Prezbo’s diatribe against Bork. (Or was it Deanzbo then?)

6:55 – Awkwardest moment: Prezbo—”He [Bork] argues because many people have different ways of giving themselves pleasure [Camera immediately pans to Biden]…”

34:59 – Bollinger’s microphone ironically cuts out as he starting talking about freedom of speech.

So, old man Prezbo used to kick ass and take names? Sounds about right.

first of all, it’s great that robert rauschenberg and william styron were asked to testify. second of all, this happened just 2 weeks before i was born (october 6). i’m pretty sure the nomination was voted out of committee on the exact day of my birth. so i guess at birth i had an unbreakable bond with not only bob bork, but also lee bollinger.
