Meet the doggies of Morningside Heights
Your throat holds back an obnoxious squeal. You unexpectedly come to a dead halt on the middle of the sidewalk, much to the disdain of a few other pedestrians. True love waddles by: a tiny, wrinkled face, a clumsy yet confident gait, maybe a little drool.
While the Morningside community is sure to take pride their diversity of people, it goes without saying that experiencing the diversity of non-bipedal residents (sorry, pigeons!) is crucial to the happiness (and cuteness quota) of many.
Meet the six cute dogs that caught our eye:
Breed: Belgian Shepherd
Age: 11 ½ weeks
Likes to chew: “Whatever you don’t want him to.”
Quirks: “He runs into walls a lot. He also tries to herd us because he’s a shepherd. Oh, and he cries like a girl!”
Name: Bowie (“Named after David Bowie.”)
Breed: Boxer + Hound
Likes to chew: “Oh, anything around. Safety pins, nails…”
Bowie’s behavior: “Well, she recently ran away and got put in doggy jail for about three hours. … She’s an amazing, loving, good dog.”
Breed: Cairn Terrier
Age: around 5 (she’s a rescue)
Hobbies: She’s “eager to find rats” on night walks.
Ketzie’s stubbornness: “My husband”–a professor at Columbia–”and I usually take her for a walk every day, but she hates when my husband doesn’t come on the walk with us. The other day, he wasn’t there and we only got as far as her morning business. She would not move and simply planted herself!”
Name: McGee (“He’s a Florida resident.”)
Breed: Golden Retriever, “…though you can’t tell with his bad haircut.”
Likes to chew: “Anything you can do tug-of-war with, anything with stretchy rubber.”
McGee’s feats: “Well, in Florida, at Delray Beach he started a dog park. He liked going to the same spot—nobody ever hung out there. But we ended up getting three to four tickets of about $50 each for it, and the police felt so bad for us that they made the empty space into a dog park!”
McGee’s human also says he “refuses to walk anywhere without his own leash. He has tenure, and because he has tenure he likes to have control.”
Breed: Shepherd mix
Likes to Chew: shoes
Jackson’s human on his habits: “He should have stopped chewing as a puppy. He loves flip-flops. He has…destroyed many flip-flops.”
Breed: Jack Russell Terrier + Pekingese (“…might have a little Chihuahua.”)
Likes to chew: Bully Sticks
Sadie’s love life: “She had a German Shepherd boyfriend named Bruno at about four months old. He would toss her around, and she would lie down between his arms.”
Hobbies: “She does yoga sometimes.”
