Final vote tally in District 13 primary still unclear
If Rep. Charles Rangel thought he was finished with the toughest re-election campaign of his life on Tuesday night, he may have been mistaken. As results have continued to trickle in, his margin of victory has shrunk significantly, and the possibility of a recount, however remote, has increased.
When the New York Times called the race for Rangel on Tuesday night, the congressman was beating his main challenger for the District 13 seat, State Senator Adriano Espaillat, by about 20 percentage points. Rangel finished the night with a narrower 5.4 percentage point lead, and that lead has since dipped to 2.6 percent, with many votes yet to be counted.
According to unofficial results from The Associated Press, the longtime Harlem Congressman has 16,898 votes to Espaillat’s 15,823 votes—a difference of only 1,075. That tally also doesn’t include 32 of the district’s 506 precincts, or any absentee ballots.
City Board of Elections spokeswoman Valerie Vazquez told CBS Local that absentee ballots would be counted beginning on July 5. It’s also unclear why 32 precincts have seemingly yet to report their results, a day and a half after the polls closed. A manual recount of paper ballots would take place if Rangel’s margin of victory decreased to less than half of a percentage point.
In a statement released yesterday, Espaillat said that the campaign’s message resonated with voters, “as demonstrated by our strong show of support and the voting results that continue to come in,” but he did not comment on the possibility of a recall. A few key Espaillat allies, including City Council member Ydanis Rodriguez, were set to hold a press conference at 3 p.m. outside the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building, where Rangel’s office is located, to stress the importance of counting all the votes.
Despite his shrinking margin of victory, however, Rangel has been back to business since election night, telling NY1 he hasn’t heard about the new numbers “because I’ve been on the floor, I’ve been at legislative meetings, I’ve been at caucuses.” He also tweeted about his attendance at a ceremony for marines and about his excitement at today’s Supreme Court ruling upholding most of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

The best thing we could do right now is cut off the unemployment befneits that lead to this shit. I mean, some of these folks out in Louisiana are having 9-10 babies just so that they get a healthy check in the mail and they don’t have to go to work! We’re 75% white, but if these policies like this keep up that number will go down pretty quickly. Meanwhile, we have 30 million illegals hanging out in the US and crying about how they’re being mistreated, getting all of the befneits of being an illegal without all of the responsibilities of a citizen. People who will overwhelmingly support Obama simply because he will keep their gravy train going while they sit their lazy ass at home and collect their hefty unemployment checks. We say Stay out of America. and yet we will give them jobs, drivers licenses, work permits, homes, food. That’s dumb. What we need is we need for the state to be harder on these guys, plain and simple. Build more jails so we can hold the gangs, cut off their unemployment checks so that they’re forced to work, and in general just put a boot in their ass when they decide to be lazy. That’s how they do it out in Texas right?
The campaign was a great show of sportmanship all the way up until the count and the victory speech. In my years of watching vote countdowns and exit polls, never have I seen such a bizarre turn of events in such a small window of opportunity. Let’s have a show of hands on this one.
Burn in hell, you anti-american specster scum! The specsucks blog is the only source of truth!
That’s because all you white bardasts are ALREADY in POWER. You don’t need any of that because you’ve been stealing rights and keeping the Melanin Man down from day one. Never mind that BLACK ON BLACK CRIME is geometrically worse than cross-race of ANY race. Never mind that the current young black male mindset is one of cultural defeat and permanent insignificance, culturally enforced by death and injury from and by themselves.I watch this every day at work and surrounding my wife’s home in Ghetto Central in Fornicalia.Let me write what TexasFred and many others know and write: no one will respect or want to assist young black males or even the bulk of blacks themselves until they themselves prove that they are worthy of support. And that includes aspirations of progress and forward thinking to include education, consideration for others, kindness, a willingness to reject violence, to embrace building, assimilation, to get involved with their country and work for EVERYone, not just themselves. But I don’t see that coming. All I hear and read is more of the same from the Poverty Pimps, Welfare Pimps and Racial Pimps to include the likes of Sharpton, Waters, Jackson, et al. Aided and abetted by GOWPs. These people don’t want racial equality; they want racial DIVISION because it keeps them in POWER and it keeps them in tune-ups for their Porsches and Rollers. And THAT is self-sustaining DEFEATISM.BZ
