CU CIRCA might have dinner with Ahmadinejad

Spectator File Photo

Fifteen members of the Columbia International Relations Council and Association might have the opportunity to dine with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Sept. 21 according to an email from the club’s listserv.

Despite the controversy surrounding the leader, including student protests and sharp criticism (“cruel and petty dictator” anyone?) from PrezBo during Ahmadinejad’s speech at the 2007 World Leader’s Forum, members of CIRCA are still excited for the opportunity said their vice president of academics, Tim Chan, CC ’14.

An article on the Spec website this weekend initially reported that the reason behind the opportunity was due to a member’s relationship with the Iranian ambassador. Chan subsequently clarified this statement to say that in fact no one in the group has a close relationship with the ambassador and the dinner party, scheduled during the UN General Assembly, is still tentative.

It seems pretty obvious that someone does in fact have a close relationship with Ahmadinejad. Then again, maybe he just loves Columbia since we’ve been so nice to him in the past.

Ahmadinejad is the legitimate president of Iran. U.S. media coverage of the Iranian elections was distorted, they never talked about the many poll results that showed that he won.

Umm… If the majority of Iranians are repulsive, Holocaust-denying, anti-semitic, homophobic slugs (not saying they are or anything…) that really doesn’t make it okay that their president is one too.

Columbia would choose to dine with a terror-sponsoring, Muslim extremist instead of say, Rush Limbaugh. Ahmadinejad has proven to be a director of murder within Iraq, responsible for countless American troop deaths, while Rush is guilty of right-wing talk. Of course Columbia finds right-wing thought and speech to be MUCH more dangerous than murdering thugs. Go figure.

who said columbia students wouldn’t have dinner with Limbaugh? extreme right wingers have been invited and hosted on campus, and their views have been challenged just like Ahmadinejad’s were 4 years ago. Go figure.

Limbaugh has “views” and expresses them with speech. Ahmadinejad has “views” and expresses them with bullets, RPGs, and car bombs. Columbia sees no difference in these expressions of viewpoints. Ahmadinejad should not even be allowed in this country…PERIOD! Go figure.

What a disgrace. There is no telling how many this man and his Republican Guard have murdered, tortured, imprisoned etc… Many, many of them students the same age, the same hopes and dreams of the students at Columbia. Whoever invited him and any who attend and dine with this monster should be tried for treason. You can rest assured many of the college students in Iran will be heart broken Columbia students are doing this. I was amazed 4 years ago when you invited him, but after he had so many college students killed, beat, tortured and imprisoned during the protests I am not just amazed at your lack of consideration I’m so thankful I didn’t send my son or daughter to Columbia!

I do agree with all the concepts you’ve oeffred to your post. They’re very convincing and can definitely work. Nonetheless, the posts are very short for newbies. May you please lengthen them a little from subsequent time? Thanks for the post.
