Columbia in the blogosphere

With blogs like Butler Sleepers, Professor Zoo, and even a MyLifeIsBarnard Twitter, it’s clear that Columbians love sharing humorous tidbits of student life on the internet. But what about students who go beyond the funny and instead use  blogs to publish original artwork or document dorm-friendly recipes? After the jump, some of the best student blogs we’ve found.

Barnard senior Daryl Seitchik‘s wry humor and artistic ability stand out in her comics about everyday life, which she posts on her blog Daryl Doodle. “Sometimes I even gross myself out with how much I love comics,” Daryl says. “I can’t walk down the street without seeing them, even on empty sidewalk. So, I don’t go out much. On a good day, I can finish up to one page of a story, and since I never run out of stories, the cartoon blog’s my way of saying to the world, ‘I’m not dead. I just only get up from my drawing board to buy more nonperishable food items.’”

Elisa de Souza, also BC ’12, seamlessly blends words and images in her blog, Felt Images. Her entries include photography, artwork, art criticism essays and creative writing. Elisa says her blog is “a way to keep me motivated and inspired. I like the idea of having one place where my favorite work comes together; it’s a portfolio of sorts… I’m not the kind of blogger who likes to get all personal and say what I did and ate every day, but in a way, my blog has become a diary. It’s nice too look back and see what I produced and what I was thinking and feeling at the time through my work.” Elisa also hopes to “open people’s eyes to new artists” through her art criticism pieces.

Noel Duan, CC ’13, also known as Miss Couturable, started a teen lifestyle and fashion blog. Noel’s interest in fashion fuels her creative endeavors: “I think fashion is art, and art is fashion. I believe that there should be just as much emphasis on the intricate drapery and folds of the Greek chiton as on the construction of the Parthenon, and that Marie Antoinette’s extravagant outfits represent the courts of 18th century France better than Versailles itself.” Aside from posting glossy images of the fashion world, Duan has also posted her 20-page essay on street fashion photographer Bill Cunningham, proving that there is more to fashion blogging than just slick models and pretty clothes.

Sevan Gatsby, BC ’12 writes a diverse blog called Simply Sevan. What started as “a simple photo diary” and a way to keep tabs on internet finds evolved into a something more. When Sevan went abroad to Madrid, she used the blog as a tool to practice Spanish, in adherence to Middlebury College’s ‘total immersion’ policy. “Now,” says Sevan, “I’ve taken to writing about my cooking experiments: I was so sick of eating terrible cafeteria food or spending tons of money eating out, so I learned to cook two summers ago. I discovered just how easy it is to eat really well in college.”

Columbia junior Nina Caldas writes about delicious treats in her food blog, Ambrosia. Her cousin, who is also a food blogger, inspired her to start a blog last summer. “It’s been a really great learning process, as I’ve learned to look at food in totally new ways,” Nina says. “I like to feature recipes that are simple to make and that don’t require too many specialized pieces of equipment or crazy ingredients.” Check out Ambrosia for some creative recipe ideas and food photography that’ll make your mouth water.
