CCSC candidates released, not much competition

Columbia College Student Council has just sent us its list of candidates for the 2013-14 academic year—and at least in the executive board and class council races, there’s not a lot of doubt who the winners will be. A party led by current Vice President of Finance Daphne Chen, CC ’14, is the only group running for executive board, and there is only one group in each of the three class council races, plus one at-large representative candidate for the class of 2016.

Barring any big surprises, next year’s executive board will be the “It’s Always Sunny at Columbia” party:

Daphne Chen, President
Bob Sun, VP Policy
Peter Bailinson, VP Communications
Noah Swartz, VP Finance
Briana Saddler, VP Campus Life

Meanwhile, there are quite a few candidates for each of the four representative positions—Student Services, Pre-Professional, Academic Affairs, and Alumni Affairs—as well as the open University Senate seat. For all the candidates, click after the jump.

but our system creates a dynamic where, since held in the first few weeks of school, freshman are not given the tools to make an educated decision. Then the councils are given pretty much total control over everything having to do with their class’ government. Therefore, there isn’t a genuine way for potential competitors to gain enough experience to really have a fighting chance. Unless, of course, the past officers go on to run for a higher position or join the current party’s team for the following year.

If competition is truly healthy then our system, one that doesn’t give competitors a real chance, has got to be diseased…

to run your blog, but what if you added a title to maybe grab folk’s attention?
