Attempted robbery on 114th St.

Public Safety is currently circulating another alert informing students of an attempted robbery that occurred last night on 114th St. between Broadway and Amsterdam—and it sounds eerily familiar to a previously reported incident.

At about 11:50 p.m., two students were walking on the north side of 114th towards Broadway, when one was assaulted by the suspect. The suspect threatened the victim, shoving her against a fence, and demanded she give up her iPhone. When the student said she didn’t have an iPhone, the suspect took off towards Amsterdam without taking any property.

More: The suspect can be seen on security tapes walking back and forth 114th before the crime. Just a few minutes before, he followed another student into Ruggles Hall, but left the building immediately.

Students are encouraged to contact the 26 Pct Detective Unit at 212-678-1351 if you have any further information about this crime. If you observe this person on the street, call the police immediately by dialing 911.

Appalling. That a CU student wouldn’t even have an iPhone. What is this world coming to?

This is terrible! This happened five minutes before I walked home on 114th. There have been so many incidents like this recently. Where is Public Safety???

You’d think that public safety would realize that just sending out notifications is not a viable solution. Students are clearly being targeted on 114th, and public safety needs to do something more active about it.

      What would you suggest, specifically?

Maybe having more security on 114th, especially at night? This is the third robbery in a month and public safety doesn’t seem to be doing anything about it. I also find it really frustrating that I pay the same amount for housing as everyone else but don’t have security just because I was put in a brownstone (not in a sorority or fraternity).

They need to put more lighting, more security, and security cameras on 114th street. Putting cameras all over the place is a big deterrent.

As a Broadway resident, this is starting to become terrifying. Like everyone is saying, where is Columbia on this?

Um… how am I supposed to call the 26 Pct Detective Unit if my iPhone just got jacked? As much as I wish I could call 911 with my Hermés scarf, Patrick Thomas has really been dragging his feet on the rumoured Spring 2012 Telecommunications Line.
