Iranian mission cancels CIRCA’s dinner with Ahmadinejad (UPDATED)

Spectator File Photo

Multiple sources say that because of the controversy surrounding the event, the Iranian mission has canceled CIRCA’s planned dinner on Wednesday with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Another unspecified Columbia group was offered the chance to dine with him instead. The story, which was first reported by us on Sept. 10, picked up national attention after Fox News and the New York Post incorrectly reported that President Bollinger had extended an invitation to Ahmadinejad.

that it was the mission who cancelled dinner, A. must have had a busy enough schedule that dinner with students was bottom priority.

If the students, or the university, were beaten by so little pressure it’s a tragedy for open discourse. Even if you vehemently disagree with Ahmadinejad you should still be open to the idea of others, who likely also disagree, engaging in a discussion with him over those disagreements. Will it be fruitful? It certainly won’t be if you don’t allow it to continue.

      • So you'd turn down a chance to talk to Obama? • September 20, 2011 at 3:05 pm •

You could make an argument that Obama is a mass murderer based on his actions in Iraq, Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia. Would you turn down dinner with him?

I’ll humor you and revise my statement: You don’t discuss ideas with a person like Ahmadinejad. Period.

Agree with above. Bwog says that CIRCA themselves decided not to attend, and they gave their tickets away to another organization. This event is being attended by hundreds of students from many universities, I am not sure why Columbia is getting all the press.

“It is not clear as of yet whether or not CIRCA was disinvited from the event, or if they chose themselves to avoid further controversy.

CIRCA President Rhonda Shafei, CC’12, only confirmed that CIRCA would not be participating, and that the tickets have been given to another student organization. She would not comment on which group this might be.”

“Multiple sources say that because of the controversy surrounding the event, the Iranian embassy has canceled CIRCA’s planned dinner on Wednesday with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. ”

Are any of your sources the president of CIRCA?
The dinner is outright canceled? Not according to CIRCA, which doesn’t have possession of the dinner as your statement suggests.
Bwog’s coverage is better, and they don’t even pretend to be a predominately news oriented site.

Jesus, Spectrum. Get your shit together.

Nowhere does the article say the dinner was outright canceled, bwog originally said circa canceled the dinner, not iran canceled the dinner (which they’ve now changed), the dinner OBVIOUSLY is canceled, bwog and spec agree on that much.
