Five reasons you’re coming to Homecoming
Have you ever noticed that Columbia isn’t your typical college? We don’t dutifully attend all football games, spend 90 percent of our free time sunbathing on the quad, or live and breathe for “Meatloaf Mondays.”
We’re unique, it’s true. One of the sad but true things about Columbia is that we all individually take on a lot of commitments, making age-old traditions of our university seem… well, missable.
However, if there’s one football game Columbians are most likely to attend, it’s Homecoming. Show up prepared to see your entire school and then some. So maybe don’t paint yourself all blue—or do? Either way, Homecoming is one of the handful of events a large number of Columbians attend. Why, you may ask? Well let me break it down for you…
1. Day drinking in dorms—is there more to life?
This is one of your few moments as a young college student to wake up early and pregame in the comfort of your own room. Set your alarm early, shower, eat some carbs and begin your day of festivities.
2. You get awesome pictures with all of your friends.
Everyone will be wearing Columbia Blue or some sort of Columbia apparel. Instagram lovers- this is your time to shine. Take game day selfies, pictures with your floor and in front of Alma. Just make sure you use Amaro or Walden for those blues..
3. It’s right in the middle of midterms—we need this.
Most of us have just completed, are in the midst of, or have not even started studying for Midterms. The endless problem sets, essays and chapters we didn’t quite manage to read these past few months are finally starting to catch up to us, and when everything isn’t making too much sense, a break is much needed. So plan your weekend around Homecoming- grab a seat in Ref all Friday and Sunday, but try your best to make it to the festivities on Saturday for a much deserved day of festivities.
4. Any reason for bagels and mimosas at 9 a.m.
There is a certain beauty about a perfectly delicious Nussbaum bagel and mimosas on Saturday mornings. Make sure you get a good dosage of carbs before and throughout the day. Safety first.
5. We rarely get to be shmacked in public—embrace it.
We know it- we’re not a “party” school. The hottest club on a Friday night is probably Butler library. Instead of getting nominated for “best parties” and “wildest schoo” we get most stressed and most difficult. However, on Homecoming, we have to option to go all out. So get dressed in blue, say yes to any pregame and leave the books at home for a day.
6. Face the Facts:
No matter how many times you may complain about the lack of air conditioning, the 8:40s and the amount of work, at the end of the day you still go to school here. Why? Because its all worth it. At the end of the day I wouldn’t want to go to any other school because everything comes full circle. For each all-nighter, there is an unforgettable night with friends. For each bombed exam, there is a class you can’t get enough of. For each lost friend, there is someone that you just can’t get enough of.
You love this place in your own way.
Celebrate it. Welcome home.
