Last call for opinion openings

Everybody has an opinion, and just like everybody has a belly button, nobody cares.

If you print it in a newspaper, though, somebody might.

We’ve extended application deadlines for columnists, editorial board positions, bloggers, and artists. Click the links above for the forms.

Below are the job descriptions. You may simultaneously apply for and hold more than one position.

The editorial board represents the editorial voice of the paper. The members of the editorial board meet twice a week to decide the topic, opinion, and tone of staff editorials. A single member is given the duty to pen staff editorials for the entire semester, the rest are expected to contribute edits. Past staff editorials are here.

Columnists write 800 words every other week and generally carry a steady and recognizable theme. A good opinion column should be relevant to Columbia and timely. Past columns are here.

Bloggers publish regular posts on Spectrum once or twice times a week. A good opinion post should be relevant to Columbia and make use of the medium by using multimedia. Past posts are here.

Artists have the option to draw independent editorial cartoons or illustrations that accompany written content. We are transitioning to a primarily digital medium for editorial art this fall, and as such prior experience with Photoshop or Illustrator is preferred but not required.

All applications are due August 18 at 11:59 pm.

Questions should be directed to the editorial page editors, Andrea Garcia-Vargas and Lanbo Zhang, at andrea.garcia-vargas@columbiaspectator.com and lanbo.zhang@columbiaspectator.com

Why are the Spec comments just openly used by the staff as an echo-chamber for their self-congratulation?

I will never understand the satisfaction some people at Columbia seem to find in making mean comments about other students on the internet. Rather than expending the time/energy to think of the meanest/rudest thing you can possibly say, why not just read something else? If you don’t like Spec, or you don’t like the comments on Spec, then just go visit another site. I promise I will not cry myself to sleep over it. (Or maybe I will — but that’s my worry, not yours…)
