REVIEW: Crumbs—we can feel the seams of our jeans bursting already
Attention all cupcake connoisseurs: you no longer have to make the grueling trek to the nearest Magnolia’s for deliciously artistic baked goods. We’re pleased to announce the grand opening of Crumbs Bake Shop right here in MoHi (2814 Broadway at 109th Street). Between two bellies, we were able to demolish two giant-sized cupcakes and a 12-pack assorted sampler (with no regrets). Check out some must-knows below. Cupcake review and photos after the jump.
- The bakery is very spacious, and it offers free Wi-Fi. Take that, Hungarian Pastry Shop!
- Crumbs cupcakes are much larger than Magnolia’s, with a higher cake to frosting ratio and a larger variety of flavors from which to choose. Plus, you no longer have to pay the pesky metro fee to get your sugar fix.
- At $3.75 a pop, each cupcake is definitely large enough to split with a friend. Maybe even two.
- The coffee is great (if you stop by today, coffee is on the house!)

The Best-Seller Taste Pack ($24) features 12 2.25 inch bite-sized cupcakes
These cakes are tiny—so you don’t feel as guilty after eating one. That, or you end up eating all 12 in one sitting. It could go both ways. Flavors include Chocolate Chip Cookie (chocolate frosting in the middle, with creamy but light frosting on top), Double Chocolate Cupcake (a lot of chocolate, but not overwhelming at all—it’s like a mini-chocolate cake), Coconut Cupcake (white cake with creamy, rich frosting, topped with flakes of coconut—light but satisfying), Red Velvet Cupcake (the sprinkles tasted like little sprinkles of butter), Mint Chocolate Cupcake (amazing mint frosting, really moist with frosting in the middle), Oreo Cupcake (chocolate cake and vanilla icing with Oreos mashed in), and Vanilla Cupcake (nothing too special, but tasty nonetheless).
The cake was a bit dry, but the frosting more than made up for it. Frosting really makes this place. Did we mention the apple-pie filling?
Light maple syrup cupcake frosting, topped with walnuts and filled with a cream center!

to go here instead of hungarian or even any other pseudo-independent coffee shop just because they don’t have wi-fi? pathetic
What on earth is so ridiculous about that?
I, for one, am certainly suggesting people go to Crumbs over the Hungarian Pastry Shop because it’s far better. Maybe some competition will force the Hungarian Pastry shop to clean its facility once in a while and make tastier products.
Just because something’s “pseudo-independent” doesn’t mean it should be frequented. They have to be deserving of our patronage.
“because it’s far better”
So you like desserts that taste like nothing but sugar?
Crumbs = the perfect cupcake.
Yes, you f-ing hipster. P.S. Hungarian has a B, and their pastries taste like garbage.
i don’t think you know what a hipster is
the possibility of everyone at columbia getting dibetes just sky rocketed
the fuck is everyone bitching about cupcakes? they are expensive and taste like shit
i’ve been in the neighborhood since 1995, and have a particular fondness for patronizing the small mom and pop shops, particularly wendy and peter’s P&W as well as the hungarian next door (this is theirs too, as well as symposium). however, i agree with others that the hungarian is dirty and dingy, and the pastries do taste like shit (silver moon bakery is really the place to go for amazing pastries). ive truly never had a croissant *worse* than theirs. and their coffee is like watery mud. sorry, but it’s true. no one goes to the hungarian for value or taste, except maybe their lace cookies. but i do love our neighborhood (i;m here for the long haul unlike many of the CU, BC, and TC students) – and love seeing new and “better” places pop up in the hood. let’s just hope this puts more pressure on the mom and pop to provide better quality as id like to see them succeed, but only if they can earn it.
Hungarian pastry shop desperately needs to renovate.
