Mourning MoHI businesses: Top 5 biggest losses
The weather’s way better than it should be this time of winter. You’re feeling surprisingly happy. But wait. Think about how much better Morningside Heights was a few years ago. Here is a list of the five biggest letdowns to the neighborhood, commercially speaking:
1. Mel’s Burger Bar replacing Tomo. Tomo was great: a centrally located place that didn’t mix sushi up with other East Asian cuisine. Regardless of whatever you think of Mel’s, you have to admit it’s not nearly as great as it was hyped up to be.
2. Ricky’s replacing Kim’s Video. This would be by far the number one greatest tragedy, up there with Hamlet and Titanic, had Butler not acquired their entire collection. Still, the snobbiness of both the clerks and even the arrangement of DVDs (by director) was unbeatable, and you could even watch movies in the basement.
3. Il Cibreo replacing Campo. The food at Campo was certainly more crowd-pleasing and (correct me if I’m wrong) more reasonably priced than it is at Il Cibreo. More importantly, though, Campo’s moving out has resulted in Mel’s becoming the resident frat house on Broadway, which is a disappointment to all … except, I guess, frat boys.
4. P&W’s Sandwich Shop closing. P&W, an unostentatious storefront beside Hungarian Pastry Shop was one of MoHi’s really unsung gems. Hungarian is trying to keep the P&W glory alive by selling a few types of pre-made sandwiches. The selection, I’m sad to report, is just as bland as their tastes.
5. Papasito replacing Angelina Pizza Bar. We definitely don’t need another Mexican restaurant in the neighborhood, let alone one that is even further south than Taqueria y Fonda. Full disclosure: I never actually tried Angelina, but it sounds like the booze was cheap and plentiful, which is more than you can say about any other pizza joint in the area!
The list goes on and on … what do you miss?

What about Havana Central replacing the West End?!?!
Anyone?!
Agree. West End was soooo much better!
Definitely the stend. P&W should be at the top.

I got a lot of Indian fienrds here. Most of them think about money and prestige, they have no love for other things. They’re smart though, and so laid-back. Some of them, however, are unbelievably artsy and symbolic. But yeah, they’re a rising Nation. In addition to Bollywood and Software Development, they’ve recently ventured into automobile (Tata Nano, the cheapest car in the world) as well. As for Americans, I don’t know why they’re called open-minded, liberal, and immoral. There’s a lot of bigotry here, labeling, and prostitution is also illegal. I think people just watch too many movies. That’s all.
