Cookie lovers rejoice: Levain Bakery—home of the legendary six-ounce cookies—opened its 3,200-square-foot Harlem store (2167 Frederick Douglass Boulevard between 116th and 117th streets) yesterday. No longer will students be forced to take the subway to the bakery’s W. 74th Street and Amsterdam Avenue location for freshly baked chocolatey goodness. And if you’re feeling ultra lazy, the Harlem location will also operate a mail order business.
Levain currently has three shops: one on W. 74th Street, one in East Hampton, and now, one in Harlem. Its menu remains consistent: six-ounce cookies, muffins, brioche, scones, and other assorted pastries (the Harlem shop has banana chocolate chip bread and baked jelly donuts!) The massive cookies come in four varieties: Chocolate Chip Walnut, Dark Chocolate Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal Raisin, and Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip.
Although the cookies are pricey ($4 each), each one is the size of two or three cookies from most average cookie shops, so you get bang for your buck. If you’ve never been to the Upper West Side store, head to Harlem immediately. These cookies are fresh-out-of-the-oven—the inside is warm, soft, gooey, and moist and the exterior is perfectly crisp and crunchy. Silver Moon definitely has some competition. Look out for the full story in print tomorrow!

Unfortunately the walk there is extremely dangerous.
you could just go at noon…
Are you kidding me? That area of Harlem is totally gentrified…it’s totally safe to walk there in the day time. Sure, you have to be careful at night, just like you have to be careful anywhere you walk in NY at night.
Rich,
Naina and I both think you have to be kidding. Would love to see you back up your alarmist statement with facts. Perhaps you feel this way because you’d have to walk through Morningside Park? Where did you get the idea that it is “extremely dangerous”?
The ONLY reason Rich says it’s dangerous is because he is racist. This neighborhood is fine and I never feel threatened. Embrace diversity and open your mind and come get some of these cookies!!! They are worth the trip no matter where you are coming from.
